#3 Central Market

Central Market was the first wet market in Hong Kong and was a fresh food market in Central. The precursor of the market was Canton Bazaar, which was established in 1842. It is listed as a Grade III historic building.

The decreasing usage of the market has been under concern and it is planned to cease it for good. After the time travel, we notice that our boss had made a decision of closing it in 2003 and refurbishing it for revitalization. Now, it was reopened to the public in Aug 2021 with most building elements and spatial configuration preserved and has become a new public space for the community more than a place selling fish and meat.

Here, as being the officials in the past, we can experience something new that seems to fulfill what the community needs in the district. When we think of a Hong Kong wet market, the image of retailers yelling loudly and customers getting stuck in front of shops choosing their desired ingredients for dinner comes into mind right away. Who would ever imagine that it is possible to dine in a market with a wide variety of restaurant choices, and even attend some artistic workshops here? Check out the following photo quiz, and find out what kind of shops should appear in the past and are preserved luckily till now! Hopefully, you will see how this “Playground for all” concept changes the consumption habit in the community.
